Pieter Roelfsema part of €18.3 million NWO-funded EBRAINS–Neurotech initiative

11 November 2025

A major new Dutch research initiative is set to accelerate the development of next-generation brain technologies. The EBRAINS–Neurotech consortium has received an €18.3 million grant from the Dutch Research Council (NWO) to strengthen the national infrastructure for neurotechnology: the science of connecting technology directly with the brain.

The consortium brings together nine partner institutions across the Netherlands, uniting experts in neuroscience, nanotechnology, and computing. Their shared goal: to design smarter, smaller, and more sustainable brain–computer interfaces and to create the research infrastructure that will support future breakthroughs in brain science.

Among the participants is Pieter Roelfsema, known for his pioneering work on visual prostheses that may one day help blind people see again.
