When the eye ages, and cataract develops, an early and frequent problem is from straylight deterioration. Straylight causes typical early cataract problems not explained by visual acuity loss, such as with driving at night, facial recognition, hazy vision, etc. Straylight must be taken into account for proper objective indication for cataract surgery.

Straylight is a physically well defined characteristic of the human eye. It is accepted by the International Standards Committee CIE as the definition of disability glare, an important safety issue in driving. Straylight values vary widely in the population. It can be assessed accurately.

Originally presented at the Wavefront congress. Athens Greece, Februari 11, 2005. Presented also and video taped at The Eye and the Auto conference. Rochester/Detroit USA, June 24, 2005. Straylight originates from light scattering processes in the optical components of the human eye. In the young normal eye four sources dominate: light scattering in lens and cornea, fundal reflectance and eye wall transmittance. The scattering processes are physically well characterized. In the older eye scattering by Rayleigh-Gans processes in the lens dominates.
