Nine out of ten people with diabetes have type 2 diabetes. This disease used to be known as ‘old age sugar’. People with diabetes have high blood sugar levels. In people with type 1 diabetes, this is because they make too little or no insulin. In people with type 2 diabetes, this is because their body no longer responds well to insulin. Obesity, high blood pressure and high cholesterol are risk factors for type 2 diabetes.
