About Antonio

Vision

Antonio’s dream is to contribute to helping blind people recover useful vision and independence through a visual prosthesis.
In Spain, he participated as a core team member within the first human trial with an intracortical microelectrode array in visual cortex, where he designed and performed psychophysics experiments involving electrical stimulation protocols, Deep Learning image processing techniques and behavioral and neural data analysis.
Now in the Netherlands, as part of Roelfsema’s lab neuroprostheses team, he works towards the next generation of brain implants for the blind, by advancing on and integrating the technological, scientific and clinical developments of the implant.

Bio

Originally from Granada, Spain, by 2015 and 2017, Antonio earned a B. Eng. degree in Industrial Technologies and a M. Eng. degree in Industrial Engineering at UPCT in Cartagena (Spain), while specializing in Biomedical Engineering as an international student at Polytechnic University of Milan (Italy) during his master’s degree. During this master’s thesis, he developed Deep Learning models of retinal encoding of visual information.
In 2018, he started working on his PhD on cortical visual neuroprostheses at under co-supervision of J.M. Ferrández Vicente (UPCT ) and Eduardo Fernández Jover (Biomedical Neuroengineering Research Group at UMH). During 2019, he worked as a visiting researcher at Tokyo Institute of Technology within Daniel Berrar’s Data Science laboratory, investigating on models of neural encoding and decoding, while working as an AI/computer vision engineer in Hongo Aerospace, a drone company, also at Tokyo.
During fall 2020, Antonio joined Pieter Roelfsema’s lab under the INTENSE project, where now he works in the next generation of brain implants for the blind together with Roelfsema’s team and collaborators.
