He became a neuroscientist out of pure curiosity: ‘Understanding how the brain works can help solve major problems,’ says De Zeeuw. And it is not just about alleviating or curing diseases, but also about new technological developments such as deep learning: a model based on how our brains work, which is crucial to the development of supercomputers with super brains.
