Action potential

An ultrashort wave of electrical discharge that travels across the membrane (the biological cell wall that separates the inside and outside of a cell) of a neuron or muscle cell. Action potentials ensure the rapid transfer of information between nerve cells and between nerve cells and other cell types such as muscle cells.
