Ion channels are proteins that transport ions across a cell membrane. These channels are found in all animal and plant cells, but especially in the nervous system and in the heart. In the nervous system, ion channels enable the transmission of signals within nerve cells through action potentials. Signals between nerve cells are made possible by means of neurotransmitters. In the heart, they coordinate the contraction of the heart muscle using action potentials.
