Cell physiology

The workgroup of cell physiology deals with the functioning of single cells within the whole cerebellar network in-vivo. Via whole-cell recordings in-vivo we are able to evaluate the function of the different cells in the cerebellar system separately and in conjunction with activation in other, connected brain areas. In addition to the more classical approach of field potential or single unit recordings, whole cell recordings have the great advantage that the input into a neuron can be monitored together with the output. In this way, the mechanisms leading to certain output patterns can be analyzed. Furthermore, in addition to the monitoring of cell activity, cell activity can be manipulated by injecting current into the cell.
